Webinar: Overview of SSO Standards

At one point, federated identity management suffered from an unusual problem: too many standards initiatives. Fortunately, these efforts have consolidated to the point where we have two options.

This webinar explores the history of identity federation, early efforts to address multiple use cases, and the consolidation of those efforts into the two major federation standards in place today. It also compares and contrasts federation standards with user-centric identity
approaches such as OpenID.

In 30 minutes, you'll learn:

• How did standards-based identity federation evolve from proprietary single sign-on approaches?

• Which use cases led the creation of early federation standards?

• What are the most important current federation standards and how do they compare?

• What is OpenID and how does it compare to SAML?

In 30 minutes we'll answer these questions:

• How do I convince my customers, partners and service providers to Federate?
• What are the challenges that I can expect?
• How will I get everyone on the same page?
• What tools are available manage the process?

PingFederate 4.3 Released - Virtual Server Support

PINGFEDERATE 4.3 RELEASED FOR SOFTWARE ON DEMAND PROVIDERS

New Release of Standalone SAML/WS-Federation Server Introduces Virtualization Capabilities for Multi-Tenant Implementations

SaaScon, Santa Clara CA – April 18, 2007 – Ping Identity® today announced that PingFederate® 4.3, the latest version of the company’s standalone federated identity management server, is now available for download from its Web site, www.pingidentity.com. PingFederate 4.3 includes new virtualization capabilities that allow Software as a Service (SaaS) and Software on Demand providers to more easily deploy PingFederate in multi-tenant environments.

Federated identity management provides standards-based single sign-on (SSO) that works over the Internet. Based on the success organizations have seen with enterprise single sign-on and their desire to eliminate proprietary SSO mechanisms, a growing number are requiring their SaaS/Software on Demand providers to support the SAML identity federation protocol.

SaaS providers have responded by embracing SAML in general and PingFederate specifically. PingFederate SaaS or Software on Demand customers include Advanced Health, Allscripts, ATG, InfoHRM, NelNet, Rapattoni, Rearden Commerce, Siebel CRM on Demand, SHPS and Zantaz. PingFederate 4.3 simplifies deployment in multi-tenant hosted environments. With Virtual Server Identities, a single PingFederate server can now support access to multiple applications for a given client where each application requires its own distinct set of attributes. Another new feature, Virtual Host PingFederate 4.3 for SaaS and Software on Demand Providers, allows PingFederate to receive and validate federation messages sent to multiple domain names.

"ATG OnDemand originally implemented a SourceID open source solution when one of our customers required that we employ SAML for their 40,000 active users," said John Overton, director hosting, ATG. "Working with enterprise class customers with a variety of integration platforms, we require standards-based federation Web single sign-on, and its use is expanding across our customer base. The new virtualization capabilities in PingFederate 4.3 will enable ATG to deliver identity federation in a much more scaleable manner."

“Since PingFederate does not require the deployment of a full identity management suite, it is tailor-made for SaaS providers,” said Andre Durand,
CEO Ping Identity. “PingFederate allows our SaaS customers to deliver a more tightly integrated and seamless end-user experience while also allowing
them to increase revenue by reducing account sharing”

PingFederate -- Comparison of Implementation Time & Cost

For a recent Webinar, we did some research into the comparative cost of standing up a federation using three different approaches: 1) a standalone federation server like PingFederate, 2) Federation from an Identity Management Suite or 3) a free open source SAML toolkit.

We were astonished with what we found.

Brian Campbell to Co-Chair SAML TC

Ping Identity's Brian Campbell has been nominated to co-chair the OASIS SAML standards committee. This is nice recognition of Brian's contributions to the group.  Hopefully, with Brian's background in SAML and WS-Federation both, the nomination of WS-Federation to OASIS, and the work Brian's planning to do to better understand intersections with OpenID, we'll be in a good position to help promote harmony among these protocols.

 Congratulations Brian!

PingFederate Simplicity

Came across the below blog post this morning by Paul Toal of Capgemini. It's rare that we get unsolicited public feedback on our products. This is really very inspiring for our engineering team, who have really put their heart and soul into PingFederate. Making it simple has been their goal since day 1. Having largely accomplished this, our new goal is to make federation scale. The simplicity mantra hasn't been lost however, and we understand to a large degree, scale and simplicity are coupled at the hip.

"I’ve been working with federation technologies since the early days of SAML 1.0 (circa November 2002) and in that time I have seen a lot of changes to the support for the standards from various vendors.

Some have been quicker than others to support the various standards. As a consultant I have either used or been exposed to most of the major IAM products on the market, such as Sun, IBM, CA, Oracle etc.

However, what surprises me even now is that even after 5 years of SAML, the amount of infrastructure and configuration that is needed to setup and use federation within most of the products is still quite considerable. I would have expected federation to be more of a commodity by now in terms of setup and configuration.

The only vendor that I have come across to date who does meet this criteria is Ping Identity with Ping Federate. I have used this product for some time and found that, not only is it easy to setup but in addition, it doesn’t require a lot of infrastructure behind it to get it working.

Hopefully, it will just be a matter of time before the major vendors catch up. Not that I should be complaining, its kept me in a job."
