Our very Patrick Harding (CTO of Ping) along with Leif Johansson and Nate Klingenstein of the Shibboleth project wrote this great article recently which has been published by the IEEE computer society.
The article details what we've implemented in PingFederate 5.0 as 'auto-connect', the ability to automatically establish a trusted, secure SAML connection with a partner with NO configuration.
